i let burney out this morning around 8. he walked the small path that andrew had shoveled for him, did his business, and then upon walking back could barely make it. his toes were so frozen he wavered and almost fell over twice. i walked out passed the garage and brought him in. he needs boots.

post-pitchfork on saturday we went to see torche and harvey milk. i couldn't see torche, though i picture them all as very nordic looking with giant beards. i think i'm way off. harvey milk was loud and vibraty, i hit up the dance club downstairs around the second song.
mat and jason ensued dancing, smacking eachother's asses.

while sitting around the bonfire this weekend we had a small surprise. we heard a thunk! and then a high pitched squelch! looked at the ground and noticed that a baby squirrel had fallen from its home, a hole in one of our trees. we picked him up and put him in a shoebox with some tissue, where he seemed unscathed considering the fall he had just endured. he could lift his little head and even moved around to get comfortable. andrew got the ladder out and he put him back in the tree with his squirrel family. hopefully he's alright!
andrew got the saws out today and made a little squirrel house for them, including a little stoop just in case.

it's going to be a good one! the sun's not out, but it's warmer than usual.
i think i'll do all sorts of outdoor activities today, like rolling my window down on the ride to the gym, walking from my car to the door at the library and maybe even taking out the trash.
just kidding, i'll probably take burney for a walk. it was so cold the other day he collapsed and gave up on the back stoop.

this just in from the indianapolis star: even the squirrels are feeling the recession. here's the text:

Joining the list of the past year's big losers -- investment bankers, Detroit Lions, governors named Blagojevich -- are squirrels.
For reasons unknown, the furry little guys' chief food source, acorns, has become rare this season in Indiana and rarer still on the East Coast.

Biologists have taken notice, though they aren't alarmed, at least not yet. Acorn production is cyclical, they say, and they point to several extraordinary weather factors.

Still, it's a mystery.

"I don't think there's any one thing we can point to as the smoking gun," said Scott Haulton, a state Department of Natural Resources forestry expert. "It could be a perfect storm."

A late freeze in spring 2007 likely had a severe impact on the acorns from the red oaks; those particular acorns take two years to develop. (The state tree nursery in Jackson County, which grows saplings for environmental replanting, had to buy its red oak acorns this year from Pennsylvania and Northern Ohio.)

September's high winds, the remnants of Hurricane Ike, likely knocked down massive quantities of acorns from the more prevalent white oaks. Those acorns take one year to form, but by September, they would not have been considered edible by squirrels.

A dry summer also might have hurt acorn production.

Acorns are especially hard to find this season in the Northeast, but there are reports of shortages as far west as Kansas.

Although there are theories, definitive explanations are hard to come by.

"With nature, we like to categorize things -- people like to understand complex things," Haulton said. "But nature throws us curveballs."

The repercussions, however, are clear.

"Acorns are a staple for a whole array of animals," said Rob Swihart, a professor and head of Purdue University's forestry department.

Deer, raccoons, mice, chipmunks, wild turkeys, blue jays and, of course, squirrels devour acorns.

Each of these animals has other options, such as hickory nuts and black walnuts, which are having good years. But acorns are a staple, and "we will see population declines (of animals) in the next year or two," Swihart said.

Bad news for squirrels is good news for squirrel hunters, who are having a banner year at public hunting areas across the state.

As squirrels have been forced to scrounge more boldly, they make themselves easier targets.

"They're out in the open more," said Tony Carroll, a DNR staffer who helps manage the Winamac Fish and Wildlife Area in Pulaski County. "You see them in the bean fields and cornfields, around the stubble."

Still, Indiana's bar is set pretty high when it comes to strange behavior by acorn-deprived squirrels.

In the fall of 1822, a horde of squirrels ran rampant through Indianapolis.

The rodents came "swarming through the town," according to the Encyclopedia of Indianapolis. The region's corn crop was "literally destroyed."

Calvin Fletcher, one of Indianapolis' leading citizens at the time, claimed that during the mayhem, a single farmer killed 248 squirrels in three days.

Today's squirrel hunters, laboring under a five-squirrel limit, are having a good year, relatively speaking.

At Winamac in Northern Indiana, with the end of squirrel season still a month away, 204 squirrels have been taken, compared with last year's total of 168.

In Southern Indiana, at the Glendale Fish and Wildlife Area, the difference is even more pronounced: 614 to 353.
